From Arachnophobia to Arachnophilia

From Arachnophobia to Arachnophilia, edited by May Castleberry (Editor, Contemporary Editions).

At-ten(t)sion to invertebrate rights!

This hand-cut, hand-bound artist edition for the MoMA Library Council is intended to draw attention to spiders, their webs, and our shared environment through the participatory form of the pop-up book.

From Arachnophobia to Arachnophilia unfolds in five scenes, revealing a spider attached by a filament to its web; a spider and its web in a museum building, not far from a human spectator; a constellation connected to weblike threads as cosmic arachnid architecture; an enchanted cobwebbed forest; and a layered image of diving bell spiders, beings that spend most of their lives underwater.

Invertebrates represent 95 percent of all animals on planet earth, yet are threatened into extinction by such a small number of individuals. As the planet faces the mass extinction of spiders, insects, and other invertebrates, with enormous environmental consequences, this limited edition project encourages new threads of connectivity to engender a shift from arachnophobia to Arachnophilia.
