This project for MoMA draws attention to spiders and their webs through the interconnected folds of a multidimensional pop-up book. Each atlas-size copy of the edition includes three hand-cut, hand-printed pop-up scenes, or microcosms. Readers, engaged in the participatory medium of the book, are encouraged to notice not only the spider/webs in the book but those they encounter in wild and urban spaces as well. In one scene, pages unfold to reveal a geometric spider/web spotted at the corner of a house. Another pop-up, when opened, uncovers a silken filament, attached to a spider web. And the third scene offers a forest covered with delicate webs, made as lace. All convey a sense of wonder about places where domestic, natural, and cosmic architectures unite.
The limited-edition project was published by MoMA’s Library Council in 2022.
