“While enterprises to colonize other planets are put in place, this very same interface between us and the Sun and the atmosphere, continues to be compromised: carbon emissions fill the air, invisible radio waves develop in a hegemonic algorithm of finance, particulate matter floats inside our lungs. How would breathing feel in a post fossil fuel economy, and what is our response-ability?”—Tomás Saraceno

Pinksummer Contemporary Art presents ALBEDO, a solo exhibition of new works by Tomás Saraceno with Aerocene Foundation.

ALBEDO suggests a model for a landscape that balances our relationship with, and harnesses the unlimited potential of the Sun. This realization requires a thermodynamic leap of imagination, just like during an eclipse, when only in the absence of light do we become aware of our scale in the shadow of the cosmos. In that moment of alignment between Sun, Moon and Earth, do we understand that we rely on a reciprocal alliance between the elements and effects, the shifting winds, the exchange of heat and momentum, and the diffusing reflection of solar radiation towards the cosmic extent.

For his solo exhibition at the gallery, the artist presents a series of new sculptures and a new video work that emerge from the artist’s ongoing reflection on Aerocene. Aerocene is an interdisciplinary artistic endeavor that seeks to devise new modes of sensitivity, reactivating a common imaginary towards achieving an ethical collaboration with the atmosphere and the environment. As a movement for eco-social justice, adrift on air, floating free from fossil fuels, lithium or hydrogen, Aerocene moves us towards an ethical re-alliance with the Earth and its cosmic web(s) of life. Rooted in slower activism and weather-dependent interdependency, Aerocene stands as a platform for climate justice, an eco-social energy transition, human and more-than-human rights and alternative modes of knowing and sensing.

As intertwined in his artistic research, Saraceno highlights original material from Giovanni Francia, one of the major pioneers in the field of solar energy, being the first person to apply the Fresnel Reflector point focus technology principle in the Solar Station of S. Ilario di Nervi near Genoa in 1965; in this lead, he envisioned a project for a model energy-independent city that would rely on the power of the Sun. Included in the research vitrines,“Il sole e limiti dell’energia sulla terra” (The sun and the limits of energy on the Earth) an unpublished theory discussing the potential alteration of the climate by thermal pollution.
