Prototype of Maratus volans (peacock spider), Web of Life (2020) | for a real Augmented Reality

2020, Acute Art, London, UK · Curated by Daniel Birnbaum

This new experiment for a real Augmented Reality aims to bring our attention to spiderly lives, to cultivate “arts of noticing” the synanthropic spiders and webs with whom we share homes and the planet, but that we tend not to see, sense, or consider as kin. In an effort to collectively counter the planet’s sixth mass extinction, Studio Tomás Saraceno and Arachnophilia for Acute Art use the connective power of technology to augment analogue modes of interspecies interaction, inverting the technological premise. At the same time, these works are provocations to consider how finding spider/webs in your area might help to propose new kinds of cohabitation and move us from arachnophobia to arachnophilia.

All future proceeds from Maratus volans (peacock spider) and other augmented reality spiders will go toward indigenous communities in northern Argentina protecting biodiversity in their region.

Previewed as part of Unreal City, December 2020, the full Web of Life series is part of Back to Earth at Serpentine Galleries.
