Your Holiness, Pope Francis,
I hope this letter finds you in good health.
Thank you kindly for inviting me to meet you as part of the Pope Meets Artists programme.
Your Holiness, I would very much like to take this special occasion to present to you a letter from the indigenous communities of Salinas Grandes y Laguna de Guayatayoc Basin, Argentina, and to be able to discuss its contents with you.
They would like to share with Your Holiness their ongoing struggles as indigenous communities, in which they are facing breaches of environmental and human rights and the destruction of their ancestral lands in the north of Argentina.
I have known these communities for many years now and have worked with them during our recent Alfarcito Gathering in Jujuy, Argentina. On January 25, 2020, in Salinas Grandes, during the performance Fly with Pacha, for the first time in human history, The Aerocene Community together with many other communities, made a flight free of fossil fuels, raising this message into the air: “Water and Life are Worth More than Lithium”.
This flight marked 32 world records, recognized by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), with Aerocene pilot Leticia Noemi Marques, becoming the most sustainable flight in human history.
Finally, I would like to ask if Your Holiness would be willing to meet with these indigenous communities either in Rome, during Your Holiness’s next visit to Argentina, or in any other suitable location.
With every good wish to Your Holiness, I am, Sincerely Yours,

To His Holiness
Pope Francis
Delivered by hand
Is with our greatest respects that we write you this letter. We are the small communities of
Salinas Grandes and Laguna de Guayatayoc, belonging to the Prelature of Humahuaca.
Through our friend Tomas Saraceno, we send you our message from the Puna de Humahuaca,
Jujuy, Argentina, where we are living times of deep distress and worry due to the grievous
situation that we have endured for fourteen years in the hands of the Government and mining
companies extracting lithium in our territory.
We oppose this extractive activity as it requires a great amount of freshwater, obtained from the
depth of the salt flat and the lagoon. Our concern is with the fact that our territory is an
endorheic basin with a scarcity of water. If it is used for mining, we will run out of it, and we
would need to leave our beautiful territory. We want to stay and keep on living here, as our
grandparents did, and to leave it to future generations to come: a clean and healthy territory.
We would like to respectfully ask His Holiness for your support in the defense of the territory,
and that you protect us by claiming the basin of Salinas Grandes and Laguna de Guayatayoc as
a sanctuary of the indigenous people.
It is in our hopes to meet with His Holiness to present you with our struggle, and we gently ask
His Holiness to concede us this wish, in order to be able to visit you sometime, or for you to visit
our land whenever you come to Argentina.
We will pray for His Holiness to the Virgen de la Asunción of the Casabindo community, to the
Virgen de las Nieves of the El Moreno community, and to Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria,
Patroness of the Prelature of Humahuaca, to protect you and keep you healthy.
Please receive a fraternal hug from this small and simple town that needs the Solidarity of
everyone.
